we built our own world
Xochtl H–G
we built our own world
from newspaper cutouts and untaken chances
and from champagne glasses
stacked atop one another
in an attempt at something coherent,
melt them down into an hourglass
let the ashes of fallen eras
slip
between grains of sand
and watch
as memories drift up
blend in
to the black smoke of burning cities,
the rain will wash the sky away
and fall onto all the mistakes we’ve made,
in this forest of forgotten troubles
we’ll wander off
hiding from abandoned dreams
in the holes we’ve carved
out of each other’s hearts
filling each space as if they make up
for all the missed opportunities
we pretend don’t exist…
and we’ll welcome the rain
as it pulls apart moments of
churning clouds
because when the sun reappears
the light just gets
caught in our lungs
and ultraviolet only burns through us
pooling and refracting
in false perceptions
of foaming gold and bitterness
in champagne glasses.
