It was in middle school when I realized that I could not claim
my Hispanic ethnicity when a
boy with slicked back black hair called me a guero
and I had to call my grandma to ask what it meant
oh mija, she laughed, you will learn later
I wanted to know then
but I did not say it was me the word was directed at
I was scared she would be mad at me for not letting
myself know the words of a
language I was supposed to be speaking.
