VACATIONS (#11)

Staycation
Sara Mather

“it’s okay to sit with it”
she tells me
shoes worn
and steady

things can change
i attempt to say
in the place there can be no growth
but i am too aware of my ignorance
my mind’s eye obscured by dirt

she tries
“you are stronger than this”
monotone and the radio from this morning
how can you believe something so baseless,
were you never hurt?

the noise is raucous
incessant
insidious
i bury my head and try to leave it behind
but there’s nowhere to go

i sit up when she leaves
under soft covers nothing grows
but i sink back soon
the breeze is too strong

and from the pillow once more
on the bed where nothing grows
i stare at the ceiling
to sit with it and wait for change
