ACQUAINTANCES (#2)

Saved Drafts

Asha Fletcher-Irwin

Our friendship is trapped
Where message after message was abandoned
Because I can only send unanswered “how are you”s so many times
And you can only invite me where I used to go so many times
Before I realize you don’t want to tell me and you realize I’m not coming
Our friendship hammers on the walls of stolen secrets
Bartering for a second chance, and flirting with desertion
It cries on the glass of windows I didn’t break
Our friendship unravels the letters of bracelets that I never should have woven
We had more than sketches and rumors, glares and hand-holding
Building codes and forgetting them
Our friendship is dying its hair in the bathroom stall, trying to keep changing so it won’t lose us
It locks itself into photographs that look older than they are
Our friendship is confused and emotional and starting to wonder about its own sexuality
So it goes to places it doesn’t belong but gets lost on the way back
Our friendship is painted into corners, and without holding hands we can’t escape
Instead, I delete the bones of our pixilated skeleton
